ABOUT US
John Easton and Easton Bit and Spur has been designing and custom
building cowboy equipment for over 20 years. Raised in rural
upstate New York, John was about thirteen when he and a buddy bought
twenty or thirty ponies to break hoping to make some "quick cash".
So began John's life long involvement with horses and mules, and his
appreciation for the proper cowboy gear. While the pony
adventure didn't work out so well, over the years John gained a vast
working knowledge in bits and spurs, and unhappy with both the high
price and poor quality of products available, John decided to begin
building his own.

In the
late 1980's, John had the opportunity to apprentice with Mike
MacDowell of MAC Bits in Galt, California, and John's work moved
from personal tinkering to serious business. Throughout the
years John has attended engraving and silversmithing classes, been
fortunate enough to have the generous help of friends and peers such
as bit and spur maker Jerry Ginn of Stites, ID, and worked with
several trainers. An avid mule enthusiast, John also worked
with long time friend and well respected mule trainer Barney
Chambers of Coyote Mule Company to develop bits specifically
tailored to meet the needs of mule training and riding. During
the last 20 years, John has hand crafted everything from driving
buggies and carriages, to 3" snaffles for miniature horses.
While no longer making buggies, John continues to make high quality
handcrafted bits for horses, mules, donkeys, and drafts, as well as
spurs, engraved stirrups, and engraved jewelry.
"When I
began, I started building bits and spurs for myself-- trying
different things, seeing how the animal responded, learning the
best fabrication techniques. After friends began asking me
to build for them, I realized I wasn't the only one who was
unhappy with the equipment that was out there. It has
always been my hope to build quality equipment for the working
cowboy and the average rider. Bits that work, quality
spurs, and good looking products that are affordable and will
last." John Easton, owner and craftsman
All
Easton Bit and Spur products are numbered and stamped with John's
signature .
Each of John's spurs are stamped under the button, and bits on the
cheekpiece. Jewelry is generally marked on the back such as
for bracelets and buckles.
A full
time bit and spur maker, John, his wife Patti, and their children
reside in Florence, Montana. You can see John and his work at
many shows across the United States each year. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop
by. John is always happy to chat. We look forward to
seeing you!
